  • Meet the Artist
  • Full Resume
  • Short Resume
  • STACY GREENE is an American artist working within an interdisciplinary art practice in such mediums as photography, painting, mixed media, video and film. Greene is best known for her photographic series of used “Lipsticks”, a commercial product that is transformed, through use, into a subconscious & personalized sculpture.

In other artworks, she explores the “story” that a landscape, place, person or object can express, using a non-linear narrative in a variety of themes.

Greene’s many anthropological series include a variety of formats that play with gender, advertising, architecture, cars, found objects & travel ephemera, i.e.,her Bindi paintings and Pierre Loti collages for example. Cinema in all its forms is a huge influence, as well as Pop Culture. Greene patterns the artwork’s meaning within the subject matter and materials used. Ideas about aging and decay, exuberance and excess, value and material consumption are all embodied in the work.

Stacy Greene attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts. In 1979 she was awarded a travel abroad grant to study at Central-St. Martin’s School of Art & Design in London, receiving a SAS Diploma. In 1981 she held an apprenticeship at Vermillion Editions in Minneapolis, MN and while visiting New York in 1982, she met with Bob Blackburn, founder of Printmakers Workshop. Blackburn granted her a 5 week printmaking session, which, in turn, inspired a move to New York in 1984.

In 1993, Greene made a huge shift from painting & lithography to the photographic arts. She was awarded a NYFA  Fellowship in Photography in 1994. Other photographic awards followed, including the Aaron Siskind Foundation Grant and the Adolph & Esther Gottieb Foundation Grant.

Greene maintained a studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn from 1985 to 2012. She made a move to Upper Manhattan in 2005, in an area called Audubon Terrace (West Harlem/Washington Heights) and is now living and working there full-time.

And, in recent years, Greene has begun to do Curatorial Projects and Art Consulting.
